The film's main strength is that it perfectly hits the right balance between drama and comedy. Cinema audiences responded more positively than critics.
According to The Wrap , the film "failed to connect" and is on the same course as other misfires Beautiful Creatures and The Host.
Executive producer Martin Moszkowicz blamed the weak opening in the United States on "a strongly competitive environment", including competition from You're Next and The World's End , as well as strong holdovers The Butler and We're the Millers.
Moszkowicz was confident, saying it was still too early to call, with the film still rolling out release in more territories worldwide.
The Hollywood Reporter described the film as a "major in-house flop" and contributing to studio Constantin's losses for the year.
On May 8, , before the film was released, it was announced that a film adaptation of the second book City of Ashes , would start production on September 23, with a release date.
On September 10, , The Hollywood Reporter claimed that the sequel "had been pushed in the wake of a lackluster box-office opening" and The Wrap claimed the film had been postponed indefinitely.
Constantin is committed to making the sequel, the company did not want to rush into production with an unfinished screenplay, preferring to take the time to get right".
On October 23, , Moszkowicz told The Hollywood Reporter that production on the sequel would resume in , explaining that Constantin was determined to continue the franchise due to the positive response from fans to the adaptation, though noted that the marketing campaign for City of Bones was too narrowly focused on teenage fans, proving to be a detriment of Clare's older readers.
We haven't made a final decision. But we will only move forward—and we plan to move forward—when we feel we are going to get it right".
Moszkowicz later revealed the intention to shoot the film at some time in Scott Mendelson of Forbes magazine expressed surprise that a sequel was in production: " The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones received neither positive reviews nor box office large enough to justify its production and marketing expenses.
Yet, against all odds and arguably against all logic, On October 12, , at Mipcom , Constantin confirmed that The Mortal Instruments would return as a television series, abandoning previous plans for a film sequel, with Ed Decter as showrunner to start production for next year on at least two or three international shows.
There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we'll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.
To tie in with the film, Sony Pictures worked with developers PlayFirst to release a game on August 15, The game, available free for Android and iOS , allows players to hunt demons and supernatural monsters like the Shadowhunters of the story.
That includes cross-platform features, allowing users to sign in on Facebook and save their progress across Android and iOS devices.

Top international reviews. I should say up front that I haven't read the Mortal Instruments Books although I have read other books by the same author so I am judging the film as a film alone, not in comparison to the book.
I didn't really know what to expect, although I had heard some pretty sharp criticism of Jamie Campbell Bower's acting beforehand.
As it happened, I love the character he plays, Jace. I suspect much of the objection is because is he is sarcastic, incendiary and self-effacing and uses attack as a form of defence; to get that much out of a movie with lots of action, J C-B must have some acting skills, although the character will not be to everyone's taste.
There are reviewers on here who say they had difficulty following the plot: I didn't. The tale is that of a quest to find a missing cup of power; a standard motif in fantasy literature but not one fantasy fans are likely to tire of.
The other characters; Clary, Simon, Jocelyn, Luke, Magnus, Isabelle and Alec all stand as individuals and it's easy to imagine that there is plenty of backstory to expand on in forthcoming films and presumably already done in the books - I must get them!
It shouldn't be necessary in this day and age to say that it was nice to see gay people treated as in and out of love the same as the non-gay people, but it was.
I'm rooting for Alec and the hot witchy guy :D Edit added, March I've now read all Cassandra Clare's books, and whilst I can now see why people have passed comment on the divergence of the film's plot from the first book, I still love the film.
It's exceptionally well-cast, and the actors have the characters off to a tee. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote.
Please try again. I really enjoyed this movie and hope that it was successful enough to spawn some sequels. I guess its probably aimed at the YA audience, and will be compared to other popular YA material.
But I would describe it more as a film in a similar genre to the Underworld movies - its also painted on a city-based, gothic canvas - so really should not be compared directly to other YA hits such as Twilight or Hunger Games.
It has a good pace and a good selection of characters. If the series continues - it will be good to get a deeper picture of both the primary characters and the supporting ones which would really help it to fulfill its potential.
The film is definitely multi-generational and would appeal to older viewers such as myself! I read the book and loved the story, so when it was made into a movie, I was a bit skeptical about it being as good.
However, I was pleasantly surprised and actually enjoyed it very much. I understand that it is impractical, not to mention unrealistic to expect that everything will stay the same as the book.
The action and special effects were spectacular and the actors were pretty convincing too. However, I felt that Clary's father in the movie was too young looking.
But, I think, all in all, the casting was pretty accurate. I am definitely looking forward to watching the next movie in the series!
I am a huge Cassandra Clare fan, and highly recommend this DVD to everyone who love paranormal romances with tons of action and danger thrown in, not to mention Angels, Demons, Warlocks, Werewolves etc.
Some "Twilight" fans will either love it or hate it. This film was amazing. I don't buy into all the bad reviews and negative press about this film, how it is another teen franchise, a knock off, of Twilight, Harry Potter etc.
Its really not like Twilight. There may be both female led movies with vampires and werewolves but that is where the similarities end.
The vampires and werewolves in this movie are not the main figures in the plot, they support the movie. The main characters, antagonists and protagonists are shadow hunters.
They may be both led by young actresses but Twilight was a teen romance where the main character was a damsel in distress who quite often needed to be saved by the guys pursuing her.
While there may be an element of that in this movie Clary is a much tougher character then Bella, she has special powers of her own and kicks ass.
Also romance is not the main story of the movie, it is about a young woman trying to find her kidnapped mother and discovering both who she is and her destiny as a shadow hunter.
It started with a mother shielding her daughter from mortals then this mortal came this young man who wasn't like the rest and he helped the girl to escape her trauma after her mother got seriously injured and left for dead.
Load more international reviews. I really like this film although it has some major errors. For those people who have read the book, it is relatively the same up until the end, where for some unknown reason they change it all so it skips to the ending of the City of Ashes book as far as the Valentine plot line is concerned, whilst at the same time leaving other events that occurred in book one unfinished.
This i found confusing as if it was intentional for there to be just one film, the end defeat the bad-guy works, yet they leave stuff unfinished simultaneously as if there was going to be a sequel.
I watched the film before i read the books and loved it but was very confused about the end. So i read the books to find out, which i think are great and would definitely recommend and came to this opinion.
Yet i still really like the film as it has a great cast and the actors really portray the characters well, so i would say its worth a watch but watch it before you buy it.
One person found this helpful. Really pleased I did as it turned out to be a surprising hit with the family that's worth a go if you like films like The Hunger Games, but with a sense of humour as the actors drum out some great lines without taking themselves too seriously.
Based on the film, we've bought the 'Mortal Instruments' series of six novels by Cassandra Kale for my daughter as unfortunately I suspect they won't make the sequel as the film doesn't appear to be a great commercial success, which is a real shame.
Loved the books but found the film to be a poor interpretation. Jamie Campbell-Bower was miscast in my opinion. Too much the public schooboy, almost camp, not enough Jace grit and attitude.
None of the other characters had the strength I think they should have had.. To be honest, didn't hold my attention like the books did..
Competing against all the other powerhouse stories of the supernatural like zombies and vampires, this story really stands out on its own.
You can identify with the characters and the plot is compelling. Plus it's a real boost to equality. Another story filled with disguises and twists I highly recommend is Shadow sof a Host by F.
Hepton - will definitely be a movie soon. I think the makers realised they weren't going to be able to make multiple films There are a number of books in the series - so they kind of mashed up bits of the books and made a decent movie, which will disappoint fans of the books.
Also Jace looks very weird - its difficult to imagine Clary falling for him.. This is a brilliant adaptation to a brilliant book!
It's fast paced, witty and beautiful and really does Clare's books justice. The film is very different to the books, but I don't think that this makes it worse or bad.
It makes it much better! The action scenes are the best and not to mention the rather fantastic soundtrack to this film which works so well with the gothic themes running throughout!
